Pop vocal mixing is an obsession with clarity. Every word needs to be intelligible, every note needs to be in tune, and the vocal needs to sit on top of the mix without sounding harsh. It's the most technically demanding genre for vocal production because there's nowhere to hide imperfections.

Parallel Compression
The pop vocal secret weapon. Instead of one heavy compressor, blend a clean signal (gentle 2:1 direct compression) with a heavily crushed copy (8:1+, fast attack) at 30-40%. Result: consistency without the "compressed" sound. This is what Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and Sabrina Carpenter use.
EQ — Clarity Is King
High-pass at 80-90Hz. Clean out 200-350Hz for clarity (careful not to remove warmth). Strong presence boost at 4-5kHz (+2-3dB). Sparkly air at 12-15kHz (+2dB). The de-esser has to work hard to manage the brightness this creates.
Reverb — Bright Plate
Plate reverb, 1-1.5s decay, bright character, 15-20% mix. Predelay at 20-30ms to keep the dry vocal upfront. Pop reverb sparkles — it's the opposite of the dark reverbs used in trap and R&B.
Vocal Stacking
Pop choruses often stack 4-8+ vocal layers. Lead (driest, most present), tight double (center, 6-8dB below lead), harmonies (panned 30-50% L/R, more reverb), and sometimes whisper layers (panned wide, heavy reverb). Each layer has its own EQ and compression settings.
