How to Mix R&B Vocals — Warmth, Intimacy & Soul (2026 Guide)

R&B vocal mixing is the opposite of trap. Where trap is aggressive and upfront, R&B is warm and intimate. The goal isn't to make the voice louder than everything else — it's to make the listener feel like the singer is right next to them, confessing something personal.

The R&B Vocal Aesthetic

R&B vocals need to be:

  • Warm — preserved low-mids, no harsh brightness
  • Dynamic — whispers and belts both come through naturally
  • Intimate — close, personal, not performing at you
  • Smooth — transparent compression, no audible processing

Step-by-Step R&B Vocal Mixing

Step 1: Record Close

R&B benefits from proximity effect. Record 3-6 inches from the mic to get natural low-end warmth. Use a pop filter for plosives.

Step 2: Pitch Correction (Optional)

Many R&B artists use little to no Auto-Tune. If you use it, set retune speed at 25-40ms — transparent and smooth. High Humanize (40-60) to preserve natural vibrato and expression. See R&B artist settings →

Step 3: Compression

Gentle. 2:1-3:1, slow attack (15-25ms) to let breathy transients through. Auto release. 3-4dB of gain reduction max. R&B compression should be invisible — if you can hear it pumping, it's too much. Consider parallel compression for more control.

Step 4: EQ

High-pass at 60-80Hz only (keep the warmth). DON'T cut the 200-400Hz range aggressively like in trap — that's where R&B warmth lives. Gentle presence at 2-3kHz (not 4-5kHz like pop). Air at 10-12kHz, subtle. The overall character should be warm, not bright.

Step 5: De-esser

Light. R&B vocals don't have the aggressive brightness that creates harsh sibilance. Target 5-6kHz, low threshold.

Step 6: Reverb

This is where R&B gets its character. Plate reverb, 1-2s decay, warm character (highs rolled off at 6-8kHz). Mixed at 15-25% with a predelay of 20-30ms to keep the dry vocal upfront. The reverb should create a warm cocoon, not a cathedral.

Step 7: Harmonies

R&B lives on harmonies. Process them differently from the lead: more reverb, less presence, mixed lower. Pan tight (30-50% L/R). The lead should be clearly in front; harmonies support from behind.
