The Drill Vocal Chain

No Auto-Tune

Drill doesn't use pitch correction. Pop Smoke, Central Cee, Ice Spice — the rawness is part of the aesthetic. If you're using Auto-Tune on a drill vocal, you're in the wrong genre.

Heavy Compression

EQ — Preserve the Depth

Short, Dark Reverb

Room or short plate, 0.3-0.6s decay. Highs rolled off at 3-4kHz. Mixed at 8-12% max. This is NOT atmospheric — it's just enough to prevent the vocal from sounding like it was recorded in a vacuum.

Minimal Delay

Most drill vocals have no delay, or a very subtle slapback (30-50ms) mixed at 5%. Delay adds movement that drill doesn't want — the genre is about directness.

UK vs Brooklyn Drill Differences

UK Drill (Central Cee, Digga D): Slightly more melodic elements allowed. Can have subtle Auto-Tune on hooks. Stereo widening is common. Slightly brighter EQ.

Brooklyn Drill (Pop Smoke, Fivio Foreign): Rawer, deeper, darker. Zero Auto-Tune. Heavier compression. More aggressive EQ. Shorter reverb.
