Latin music is the fastest-growing genre in the world, and the vocal production has evolved massively. From Bad Bunny's raw reggaeton to Peso Pluma's corridos tumbados to Rosalía's experimental flamenco-pop — each sub-genre has its own vocal rules.
Universal Latin Vocal Principles
Spanish responds differently to processing. Spanish vowels are cleaner and more uniform than English, which means Auto-Tune behaves more predictably. De-essing is lighter because Spanish has less sibilance. The overall vocal can be warmer because Spanish consonants are softer.
The voice is LOUD in the mix. Across all Latin genres, the vocal sits higher in the mix than typical American pop or rap. The audience expects to hear every word clearly, and the production is built to support the vocal rather than compete with it.
Reggaeton Vocals
Auto-Tune: 10-25ms depending on the artist. Bad Bunny is rawer (15-25ms), J Balvin is cleaner (15-20ms).
Compression: 3:1-4:1, moderate. The delivery is rhythmic and consistent.
Reverb: Short plate (0.6-1.2s), mixed moderate (15-20%). Dry enough to stay upfront.
EQ: High-pass 70-80Hz (keep body), presence at 3kHz. No extreme brightness.
Presets: Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Rauw Alejandro
Corridos Tumbados Vocals
Auto-Tune: 10-20ms. Modern processing over traditional delivery.
Compression: Light (3:1). The voice is naturally controlled.
Reverb: Room reverb (0.8-1.2s) — sounds like a real space, not a plugin.
Key challenge: The requinto guitar and vocal share the same frequency range (1-4kHz). Use complementary EQ to separate them.
Presets: Peso Pluma
Latin Pop Vocals
Auto-Tune: 20-35ms. More polished, international sound.
Compression: 3:1 + parallel compression for pop-level consistency.
Reverb: Bright plate (1-1.5s), similar to English-language pop.
EQ: Brighter than reggaeton, more presence, more air.
Presets: Rosalía, Camila Cabello, Anitta
Spanish-Specific Mixing Tips
- De-ess at 5-6kHz, not 6-8kHz. Spanish sibilance sits lower than English.
- High-pass at 70-80Hz, not 100Hz. Spanish delivery is warmer and the voice needs that low-end body.
- Don't over-brighten. Latin vocals are present but warm — not bright and harsh like some English pop.
