How to Install Vocal Preset in Garage Band
How to Install Vocal Presets in GarageBand — Mac & iPad Guide
GarageBand makes vocal preset installation simple — but the process is slightly different from other DAWs because of how Apple structures its audio files. Here's the complete guide for both Mac and iPad.
Before You Start
- GarageBand installed (free on Mac and iPad)
- Your downloaded vocal preset pack (.zip file from TuneDrip)
- A few minutes of setup time
Installing on Mac
Step 1: Download and Unzip
Download the .zip file from TuneDrip. Double-click it to extract — macOS handles this automatically. You'll see a folder with the preset files inside.
Step 2: Locate the GarageBand Presets Folder
GarageBand stores its presets (called "patches") in a specific location:
~/Music/Audio Music Apps/Patches/
To get there: Open Finder → Go menu → Go to Folder → paste the path above. If the "Patches" folder doesn't exist, create it.
Step 3: Copy the Preset Files
Copy the extracted preset folder into the Patches directory. Keep the folder structure intact — don't unpack individual files.
Step 4: Open GarageBand and Load
- Open GarageBand and create a new project (or open an existing one)
- Create an audio track for your vocals
- Click the "Library" button (top-left, looks like a drawer icon)
- Navigate to your custom patches
- Click the preset name to load it
Step 5: Record and Test
Hit record and sing into your mic. The preset should apply all effects in real-time. You'll hear the difference immediately.
Installing on iPad
iPad GarageBand has more limited preset support, but you can still use vocal presets:
- Download the preset files to your iPad (via AirDrop, email, or Files app)
- Open GarageBand and create an audio recording track
- Tap the track header → "Plug-ins & EQ"
- Add individual effects and configure them manually using the preset values provided in the documentation
Note: iPad GarageBand doesn't support full preset file import like Mac. You'll need to set up the effects manually using the settings documented in each preset pack. It takes a few extra minutes but the results are identical.
Using GarageBand's Built-In Pitch Correction
GarageBand includes basic pitch correction — useful for getting an Auto-Tune-like effect:
- Select your vocal track
- Click "Track" in the menu → "Configure Track Header" → enable "Pitch Correction"
- Or: in the Smart Controls (B key), look for the "Pitch Correction" slider
- Slide to the right for more correction (closer to hard Auto-Tune effect)
- Slide to the left for subtle/natural correction
Tip: GarageBand's pitch correction works best when you're singing close to the correct pitch. It won't fix a completely off-key performance the way Antares Auto-Tune can.
GarageBand to Logic Pro Upgrade Path
When you outgrow GarageBand, your projects open directly in Logic Pro — no conversion needed. Logic Pro gives you:
- Full Channel Strip preset system (one-click vocal chain loading)
- Professional Pitch Correction plugin (much more powerful than GarageBand's)
- Flex Pitch for manual note-by-note editing
- More plugins and effects
All TuneDrip presets work in both GarageBand and Logic Pro, so you don't need to rebuy when you upgrade.
Troubleshooting
Preset doesn't appear in the Library
Make sure you copied the files to the correct folder: ~/Music/Audio Music Apps/Patches/. Restart GarageBand after copying.
Effects sound different from expected
GarageBand has fewer built-in effects than Logic Pro. Some preset parameters may not translate exactly. The core sound (EQ, compression, reverb) will be close, but advanced effects may be simplified.
No pitch correction option visible
Make sure you're on an audio track (not a software instrument track). Pitch correction only works on recorded audio.
